U-pick tips
Before you go
- Check that the farm is open. Fields open and close day by day depending on what is ripe. Look at the farm's website or social media, or call.
- Go early. Mornings are cooler and the best fruit hasn't been picked yet. On busy weekends fields can be picked out by noon.
- Bring: water, sun hat, sunscreen, closed shoes that can get muddy, and a cooler for the car.
In the field
- Use the containers the farm gives you or ask if your own are allowed.
- Pick only ripe fruit and pick clean: leaving overripe berries on the plant attracts pests.
- Stay in the rows you're assigned, don't step on plants, and keep kids close.
- For apples and peaches, lift and twist instead of pulling, and don't climb trees.
At home
- Refrigerate berries unwashed and wash them just before eating.
- Spread soft fruit in a shallow layer so it doesn't crush.
- Freeze extra berries on a tray first, then put them in bags.
